Miranda Mol is one of our first artists on Kess InHouse. She is native from the Netherlands and has a strong passion for bold geometric designs. She is interested not only in textiles but other designs for the home. Let her introduce herself and get inspired by her amazing artwork.
Kess InHouse : Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get your start as an artist?
Miranda Mol : I’m Miranda Mol, a Dutch girl from the Netherlands. So excuse for my English first, it is not my native language! From being a very young girl I have always been attracted to fabric and bold colours. I loved it to create all kind of stuff and the brighter colours the better! And now after many years, graduated in 1990 in Textile Design, having had a career as product (lighting) designer, I finally have come back to my first love again five years ago: Surface Pattern Design and I’m still crazy of the same: bold bright colours and textiles! That is my life!
KH : What is your creative process?
MM: My creative process starts with hand drawn or painted sketches, often abstract work, which I transform to vibrant designs and repeats in Illustrator or Photoshop. Also I love to make cutouts which I use by scanning them in and them transform digitally to use these in my designs. Lots of my designs for Kess Inhouse have been made this way.
KH : What common threads do you find show up in your artwork?
MM: My love for vibrant colorful designs, often abstract, but also sometimes figurative (like my Holiday collections for Kess Inhouse!). These holiday designs are all originally made by cutouts.
KH : What is your favorite piece? How did you develop the composition?
MM: I have two favs! From my first Retro collection for Kess “ORANGE PURPLE STAINED GLASS” still is my fav. I developed this design by drawing some swirly lines by hand and then tiling and coloring it in Ai. Second one that is my fav is from a much later collection:”FLOURISHING BLUE” This multicolored piece reflects my love for bright colours and vibrant design very good. I multiplied the motif so many times that it become some kind of kaleidoscopic effect, you get drawn into the design.
KH : What is your work space like?
MM: My workspace is a creative mess. It is the previous garage of our house that has been turned into a studio. Lots of space to create, to draw, to paint and to work on my Mac.
KH : What inspires you?
MM: I’m getting ideas and inspiration for pattern designs are found everywhere: in natural and man-made structures, architecture, basically all around me. Moreover, I get many ideas from cultural expressions, like arabesque patterns, ethnic design and tropical imagery. By drawing or painting some lines and forms or by making cutouts I start my designs, often into abstract compositions. I like this process of experimentation. When having lots of those elements I transform them into vibrant repeats and patterns in Illustrator or Photoshop.
KH : What was it like to see your art on Kess Inhouse products for the first time?
MM: That was a very big WOW! After being a Kess artist for a while I ordered some of my products and felt in love with them. My Family & I all love our big and cozy “Brown round Tiles” fleece blanket, and my mum loves her “Winter Mountains” design. I like to drink from my “Blown Away” mug and to take shower seeing my “Think Pink” shower curtain. I really hope all people that buying products with my designs on it, enjoy it the same way!
KH : What artists inspire you to create your artwork?
MM: I love the work of Sisters Gulassa, a great duo, making such an inspiring colorful pattern work! Also like the work of many other artists, too many to sum up now.
KH : What are your top 5 favorite products offered by Kess Inhouse for your artwork?
MM: Fleece Blankets, Shower Curtains, Duvet Covers, Bucky Deer Bust Jr. and Coasters.
KH : Would you recommend Kess Inhouse to other artists?
MM : Yes sure I would recommend Kess Inhouse to other artists! I did many times before already. It is great to work with Kess and it is fab for all artists to get their designs on all products.
