Kess InHouse : Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get your start as an artist?
Juan Paolo : I’m an illustrator and photographer based in California. I have Asian parents and as a kid, I had two options: piano lessons or art classes. I chose the latter.
KIH : What is your first memory as an artist?
JP : In first grade, the local newspaper was holding a Halloween-themed art contest. My drawing was picked, featured in the paper, and I won $20. I never saw a dime of that money. It was probably put towards a Happy Meal.
KIH : What is your creative process?
JP : I really don’t have one. It all starts with an idea. Whether it be vector art, portrait photography, fashion photography, nature or lifestyle photography…have a vision in mind and work towards it.
KIH : What is your favorite part of the creative process?
JP : I love being able to see the progression in whatever it is I’m working on. From line art, then to the color process…or post processing photographs I’ve taken. It can be a long process but it’s still fun.
KIH : How did your relationship with Kess Inhouse begin?
JP : Another Kess InHouse artist told me to check them out. I gave them a look and the rest is history.
KIH : What is your favorite piece? How did you develop the composition?
JP : It may not be my absolute favorite, but I’ll pick “First World Problems” the Crying Kim K. faces pattern, simply because it’s funny and it was a challenge when creating a vector from a low-res internet image.
KIH : What is your work space like?
JP : It’s very simple. It’s a desk with a Mac, and some drawing space, a coaster for my drink, notebook, and PANTONE books.
KIH : Why did you become an artist?
JP : I became an artist simply because it was something I love doing.
KIH : What inspires you?
JP : Anything and everything can and does inspire me. Sometimes I’ll see another piece of artwork or a photograph, and think “That’s way rad. I really need to step my game up.” I just try to keep an open mind.
KIH : What was it like to see your art on Kess Inhouse products for the first time?
JP : Seeing one of my photographs as something other than a print was something different. It was way rad. It basically showed me that the possibilities were endless and Kess InHouse makes that happen.
KIH : What artists inspire you to create your artwork?
JP : Other artists inspire me. I’m a big fan of Jeff Koons, Haruki Murakami, Derek Hess, Dabs Myla, Audrey Kawasaki, Poleta, Derek Sullivan, Paul Nicklen, Josh Henriquez, Andy Best, and so much more.
