Another local artist from Southern California, Jackie Rose is a talented artist with a passion for type. Her type and color choices make her artwork distinctive and funny. Get to know her a little bit more with her exclusive interview with Kess InHouse.
Kess InHouse : Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get your start as an artist?
Jackie Rose : My name is Jackie and I am from southern California. I got my start as an artist really young. All I really got for Christmas was tons of art sets and paint. After high school, I attended the Art Institute of San Diego and graduated with a Bachelors in Graphic Design.
KIH : What is your first memory as an artist?
JR : My first memory was finger painting in my room. I just learned how to make a hand angel and made probably 20-30 of them.
KIH : What is your creative process?
JR : My creative process always starts off with the type or a small sketch. Then I jump straight into a color palette. I love finding the right contrasting colors and the right mood to an art piece. After that, it is just a matter of time when I find the right layout.
KIH : What is your favorite part of the creative process?
JR : My favorite part is probably the end product. I just created something out of nothing. If my artwork can make someone smile I feel like I fulfilled my job as an artist.
KIH : What common threads do you find show up in your artwork?
JR : A lot of my artwork is inspired by puns, pop culture, and the graphic design community. I think up what my friends would want in their home or what would I want on a throw pillow and go from there. Everything is very clean with a lot of typography.
KIH : How did your relationship with Kess Inhouse begin?
JR : I was told by a mutual artist about Kess InHouse and it struck my fancy so I submitted some of my artwork and it got approved. Ever since then it has been like a dream come true, make art and it can be on anything I want.
KIH : What is your favorite piece? How did you develop the composition?
JR : My favorite piece is probably “Drop it” I loved that joke so much that I had to make a piece for it. I drink green tea all day so it only made sense to make it green tea being steeped. I am also a huge fan or gorilla marketing and to make it look like it was already in the mug was fantastic.
KIH : What is your workspace like?
JR : I usually work on my bed to be totally honest. I have a ton of Kess throw pillows and blankets on my bed. Sketchbooks, watercolor pencils, and micron pens are rolling all over while I do research on my laptop.
KIH : Why did you become an artist?
JR : I became an artist because I have always been an artist. I go to a restaurant and replate their food so it looks better. I go to the movies and sketch out the movie poster the whole time. I am driving to work and all I can think about is how cute a flying pig would look like as an art piece. I became an artist because it makes me happy and I don’t know how to be anything else.
KIH : What inspires you?
JR : I am inspired by tattoos, graphic design, other cultures, color palettes, friends, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Disney, Anime, Studio Ghibli Films, Korean Soap Operas, and music like soft rock or indie. All of my favorite things inspire my artwork.
KIH : What was it like to see your art on Kess Inhouse products for the first time?
JR : It was pure magic. Possibilities were endless when I found out about Kess InHouse. What artwork can match other artwork? How I could recreate my favorite bed sets. I was so happy when my first piece got uploaded to the site that I had it on my laptop for a few weeks just looking at the website.
KIH : What artists inspire you to create your artwork?
JR : Artists that inspire me are Brosmind, Tom Haugomat, Steve Simpson, and Alexandra Zutto. They are all graphic designers from around the world. They take advantage of white space, highlights, and textures.
KIH : What are your top 5 favorite products offered by Kess Inhouse for your artwork?
JR : I would have to say that fleece blankets, desk mats, aprons, tapestries, and everything bags. The fleece blankets at Kess InHouse are so soft that I have a blanket in every room of my house. Wonderful products.
KIH : How did you find Kess Inhouse?
JR : I found Kess InHouse by a mutual artist letting me know about sharing my work. It was a breath of fresh air that I could get paid by sharing my graphic design work that I made for fun.
KIH : Would you recommend Kess Inhouse to other artists?
JR : I do and always will. Kess InHouse is a great way to open the door to becoming an artist as a full-time job. You can create artwork and promote yourself while someone else can buy your artwork and enjoy it themselves.
