Kess InHouse : Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get your start as an artist?
Catherine Holcombe : I think I have always been an artist but began to think of myself as a professional artist about 7 years ago. I left my career in banking and I just could not see myself doing anything else but art. I knew there was a place for me in the art world. I only needed to find it.
KH : What is your first memory as an artist?
CH : I can remember sitting on my bedroom floor drawing animals from the nature books my parents had given me. I drew mostly rabbits and frogs!
KH : What is your creative process?
CH : I spend a great deal of time sketching and working out the final pieces – especially for my illustrations. I need to see the components of a piece on paper to see how they will work together. Then I start thinking about color and overall composition.
KH : What common threads do you find show up in your artwork?
CH : My art is very optimistic. I think that art connects us and tells our story, like literature and music. The maps I use connect us to places and the art connects us to things and feelings that we love.
KH : What is your favorite piece? How did you develop the composition?
CH : My favorite piece is always what I am working on right now.
KH : What is your work space like?
CH : My workspace is a little chaotic, but organized. I have too many paints, too many brushes, too much paper and way too many maps poking out of bookshelves and spilling over their containers. I have one of Carina Povarchik’s (Catru) mini frogs peaking out from underneath my computer and my cat is usually sitting in my window.
KH : What was it like to see your art on Kess Inhouse products for the first time?
CH : When I saw my art on Kess Inhouse the first time – I thought they made it look really great! I was touched by the detail in the execution of the previews. I hoped that people would see them and want to bring the home.
KH : What artists inspire you to create your artwork?
CH : I have been inspired by colorful artist like Van Gogh, Picasso, Renoit and more modern artists as well. I take my children to art museums often so we can absorb new inspiration!
KH : What are your top 5 favorite products offered by Kess Inhouse for your artwork?
CH : My favorite products are:
1. The blankets
2. The sheer curtains
3. The duvet covers with the maps
4. The desk mats
5. Big Throw pillows
KH : Would you recommend Kess Inhouse to other artists?
CH : I would recommend Kess Inhouse to other artists if they are interested in having their work on home decor products.
